Abstract
Building upon recent published work and case studies conducted in France, we suggest and analyze several possible uses of open-source software and related collaborative development methodologies for both education and research institutions. Within education and higher education institutions, openness of sources can be a way do better develop tutorials and manuals in communities of teachers, while open-source can also be an efficient way to develop software technologies within public labs and research networks, by constructively building on academic culture and the institutions of "open" science, and also to transfer them to the economy. In both cases, well-adapted collaborative technologies need to be designed and implemented to foster collective learning and cooperative development -- allowing this way for significant improvements of social welfare in key areas of knowledge-based economies. |
